What is the IELTS test?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a globally recognised standardised test that assesses the English language proficiency of non-native speakers. It measures the ability to understand, speak, read, and write in English. Institutions, universities and governments often use IELTS scores to make informed decisions regarding admissions, employment or immigration eligibility. This makes the test an essential tool for anyone looking to study, work or live in English-speaking countries.

What does the test involve?

The IELTS test involves a comprehensive assessment of candidates’ English language skills across four main components: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

  • The Listening Section

Evaluates the ability to understand spoken English and involves 40 questions based on four audio recordings.

  • The Reading Section

Tests comprehension of written texts and skimming, scanning and detailed reading skills.

  • The Writing Section

Assesses the ability to express ideas coherently and effectively in writing, and includes two tasks: one shorter task and an essay.

  • The Speaking Section

Involves a 10-15 minute interview with an examiner involving an introduction, a long turn (speaking on a specific topic for 2-3 minutes) and a two-way discussion.

You can choose from two different modules: Academic or General Training.

The Academic module is typically taken by people who want to study at university level or for professional registration in an English-speaking country.

The General Training module is for those who want to study below undergraduate level, or for migration to English-speaking countries.

The speaking and listening part of the test are the same for both modules, but the reading and writing tests are different.

The test is structured to challenge test-takers progressively

Tasks increase in complexity as you advance through the sections. There is no “pass” or “fail” grade for the test, and candidates receive an overall score from 1-9 based on their performance in each section.
